Getting Started

Self Storage Auctions (SSA) is an online marketplace where you can bid on abandoned storage units across Australia. When a tenant falls behind on payments, storage facilities are legally allowed to auction off the contents to recover what’s owed.
That’s where we come in.
We connect you directly to these auctions, all online. Place your bid, and if you win, the unit is yours to clear out — and you keep whatever’s inside.
From hidden gems to everyday finds, every auction is a bit of a lucky dip. Even better, it gives stored goods a second life instead of ending up in landfill.

Anyone 18 or over with a verified account and a valid credit or debit card on file. You'll need to confirm your email and mobile number before your first bid.

We currently operate in Australia

Yes. Browsing and registering is free — you only pay fees if you win.

Very similar to what you see on TV! However, Self-Storage Auctions allows you to view a list of all the items in a unit with multiple images rather than a quick glance from the outside like in person auctions.

How bidding works

The time is set by each facility and can be viewed on each listing. Typically, auctions will run for 5-10 days. The time remaining is always shown in your local time zone.

Any bid placed in the final 2 minutes automatically extends the auction by another 2 minutes the auction only ends when 2 minutes pass with no new bids – this ensures that there is no last second sniping as the clock strikes zero.

Proxy bidding is where you set a maximum highest amount your willing to pay on a particular auction. SSA bids on your behalf in the smallest increments needed to keep you in the lead, up to your maximum price set. Other bidders can only see the current price – not your maximum.

You can only increase it. Log in, enter the higher amount, and confirm. You can't lower or cancel a proxy bid once it's placed.

Yes. All bids are legally binding. If you win and fail to pay or collect, your account may be suspended and you may be liable for fees.

Fees & Payment

Three things:
1. The winning bid — paid to SSA through our secure payment gateway, Live Payments
2. A buyer's premium — SSA's platform fee, currently [X]% of the winning bid
3. A refundable cleaning deposit — paid to the facility at pickup and returned once the unit is empty and broom-swept
GST (Australia) or VAT (UK) may apply depending on the facility and your reseller status.

SSA uses an escrow model through Live Payments. When you win, your payment is held securely by SSA — funds are only released to the facility once you've collected the unit. This protects you from facilities that misrepresent units, and it protects facilities from bidders who don't follow through.

12% of the winning bid, charged at auction close.

• Platform fees (buyer's premium) are charged automatically when you win.
• The winning bid is processed through Live Payments at auction close.
• Pickup must be completed within 4 days of winning.
• The cleaning deposit is paid to the facility at pickup.
If you miss the payment or pickup window, you may forfeit the unit and face account suspension.

SSA processes all bids through Live Payments, our secure payment partner. We accept all major credit and debit cards. The cleaning deposit is paid separately to the facility — check the listing for accepted formats (usually cash or card).

Yes, if applicable. Australian GST is added where required and shown clearly on your invoice. If you're a registered reseller with a valid ABN (Australia), tax may be reclaimable — speak to your accountant about the specifics.

Picking Up Your Unit

The listing shows the facility address and operating hours. Once you win, contact the facility directly to arrange a pickup time within 4 days.

• Photo ID matching your SSA account
• Your paid invoice (printed or on your phone)
• Cleaning deposit in the format the facility requires (check the listing)
• Your own lock (to secure the unit between visits, if permitted)
• Transport and labour — tools, boxes, a vehicle

You have 4 days from winning the auction to collect the unit. If you don't collect within the window, you forfeit the unit and your cleaning deposit, and your account may be suspended. Extensions are at the discretion of the facility.

Yes. Winning the auction makes you responsible for the full contents of the unit including clearing it completely — including rubbish.

No. Facilities don't provide labour, tools, bins, or transport. Plan beforehand to ensure you are prepared to correctly empty the unit and transport all goods.

What's in the Unit?

Every listing includes multiple photos taken by the facility manager, plus an itemised goods list of what's visible in the unit.

Storage facilities aren't legally allowed to open sealed containers or inventory tenant property — that protects both the tenant (in case they reclaim the unit before auction close) and you (so nothing is removed before you collect).

Tenants can pay their arrears any time before the winning bidder takes possession — even mid-auction. When that happens, the facility withdraws the unit.

These must be returned to the facility within a reasonable timeframe so they can be returned to the tenant. This is a legal requirement under Australian uncollected-goods law.

Accounts & Security

We verify your email and mobile at signup, and a valid payment method before your first bid. Additional ID verification (KYC) may be requested for high-value bids.

Card details are handled by Live Payments, our secure payment partner — SSA never stores your full card details. All transactions are encrypted and protected by industry-standard fraud detection.

No. Duplicate accounts are a breach of our terms and will be suspended. This rule protects the integrity of auctions — see "shill bidding" below.

The most common reasons are:
• Declined payment after winning an auction
• Failing to collect a unit within the 4-day window ("no-show")
• Cherry-picking (leaving items behind)
• Creating multiple accounts
• Shill bidding (placing bids to inflate prices on your own or a friend's listing)
• Aggressive or unprofessional behaviour towards facility staff or our team
Suspensions may be temporary or permanent depending on the severity.

Problems & Disputes

Contact SSA support within 24 hours of pickup with photos and your order number. Because units are sold "as-is," refunds are rare — but our escrow model means funds aren't released to the facility until pickup is confirmed, so we can pause the release while we investigate. Facilities found to have misrepresented units are removed from the platform.

Contact the facility as soon as possible. Extensions are at their discretion. If you don't collect within the 4-day window, you forfeit the unit and your cleaning deposit and may face account suspension.

Shill bidding is strictly prohibited and actively monitored. Report suspicious bidding to support and we'll investigate. Confirmed shill bidders are permanently banned.

Yes. Because we hold funds in escrow via Live Payments, your payment hasn't been released to the facility yet. Any platform fees are refunded in full within 24–48 hours.

For Storage Facilities

1. Final default notice sent to the tenant, lock cut, goods accessed
2. Unit photographed and goods itemised for the listing
3. Unit listed online — you set the end date
4. Bidding takes place — you watch it live
5. Within 4 days of auction close, the winner collects the unit with ID and cleaning deposit
6. Funds released by SSA once collection is confirmed; unit is now available to re-rent

Apply through our Facility Signup page. Once approved, you get a dashboard to create listings, upload photos and itemised goods lists, and manage auctions.

There are no upfront fees. SSA charges a seller's fee of [X]% on each successful sale.

SSA holds the winning bid in escrow through Live Payments. Once the buyer collects the unit and you confirm pickup, funds are released to your nominated account — typically within 1–3 business days of collection.
